1) Tuesday After School Craft: 4-4:45 - Open to all ages & firmly limited to the first twenty participants.
2) Friday Storytime & Craft: 4-4:45 - All ages. No limit.

Give Me 20 for Preschoolers

For March and April we are doing the Give Me 20 program with our preschoolers. Sign up @ the Children's Reference Desk by March 10th. From March 1st through April 25th, if you read 800 minutes with your preschooler, you will receive a prize packet. In addition, every week we will have books online you can read. This week's book is My Little Sister Ate One Hare by Bill Grossman - http://www.bookitprogram.com/redzone/onemorestory.asp.

Little Pim

Little Pim is in!!

Little Pim is a company that makes language learning DVDs for preschoolers. We have ten languages (some are awaiting processing) available and they are very highly reviewed. Languages include: French, Spanish, ESL, Italian, German, Hebrew, Chinese Mandarin, Japanese, Arabic and Russian. There are three thematic DVDs for each language: Eating and Drinking, Wake Up Smiling, Playtime.

Little Pim has even more activities to enhance language learning on their website. One fun example is the Interactive Coloring Book - http://www.littlepim.com/fun-games/talking-coloring-book/

“ Why I Love My Library” 50th Anniversary Adult and Youth Essay Contest
In celebration of the 50th anniversary of the Roxbury Public Library, the Friends of the Library are holding an essay contest entitled “Why I Love My Library”. The winners in each category will read their essay at the Library’s Anniversary Celebration on Friday May 7, 2010. In 500 words or less tell us how the library has touched your life. Celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

On Wednesday, January 20th we will be celebrating the life of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. with a preschool craft-time @ the Roxbury Public Library. We will begin at 10:30am with a short poem about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s life and follow up with special craft. Registration is required. Click here to register.

An idea for the holidays

A parent came in this week to pick up her annual holiday stories. Every night before bed, her children get to unwrap one book to read. Some are books they own, but many are from the library. She borrows the books, wraps them, her family reads the book together, then they return the book so another family can enjoy it.

I thought that this was just such a brilliant idea. There is such exhilaration in unwrapping a present, perhaps you can try it at home too!!

Holiday Book Fair @ Barnes & Noble

The Roxbury Library is having a Book Fair @ Barnes & Noble on December 15th. Proceeds for items purchased will go directly to the Roxbury Library - BUT you need to mention the Book Fair to the cashier or hand the cashier to a Book Fair Voucher (available @ the Roxbury Library).

Programs @ Barnes & Noble on December 15th:

     10:30am - Books for Babies
     2pm - Preschool Holiday Craft - Bring your preschooler to make holiday luminaries. Registration is required. Call 973-584-2400 x503 to register.

     4pm - After School Craft - Making ornaments!!

Collecting glass baby food jars

The Children's Department is collecting empty glass baby food jars (lid not needed) for an upcoming program. If you have jars for donation, please bring them to the Children's Department. Thank you!

LEGO Holiday House Building Contest

When? Saturday, December 5th from 12pm-2pm @ the Roxbury Public Library

What? Bring your LEGOs* and build a holiday house/scene that measures no more than 12in x 12in and no higher than 24 in. You can bring any other accessories (as long as they do not need electricity and they are not perishable). The house/scene must be primarily built out of LEGOs and must be built @ the library.

All LEGO scenes will be immediately judged and then will go on display after the competition. They will remain on display through December 31st and then may be picked up by the participant (so you will get all of your LEGOs back).

Age categories: ES – Grades K-4 MS – Grades 5-8 HS – Grades 9-12
Prizes will be awarded for each age category.

*LEGOs can be provided by the library if you do not have any. Please mention that you need to borrow LEGOs when you register.

A VERY SPECIAL thank you goes out to the generous patrons who have donated LEGOs. We also received a wonderful donation from MIT!!!

MY FAVORITE BOOK CONTEST

Sponsored by the Roxbury Woman's Club and the New Jersey Federation of Women's Clubs of GFWC, this contest is open to all students in grades 4-6. This summer, the NJ State Library and NJLA offered a wonderful opportunity to libraries that participated in Summer Reading. We were given the opportunity to enter a contest for free tickets to a number of very exciting productions. A giant congratulations to Bridget and Clara Donnelly who won tickets to Sesame Street Live at the IZOD Center!! To be honest, I am shocked that we won them and I am so happy that Clara and Bridget will have this wonderful experience. A special thank you to all of our Summer Reading participants. Keep those pages turning!!

September 16th @ 10:30 am - Happy Birthday, H.A. Rey Storytime. Celebrate everything Curious George at this very special birthday party storytime.

September 17th @ 4:30 pm - Storytime with Fireman Mike. If you love fire trucks, do not miss this very special storytime.

September 21st @ 6:30 pm - Bilingual Beditme Storytime. To celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month, we will be reading bedtime stories in English and Spanish.

The Diary of a Wimpy Kid #4, Diary of a Wimpy Kid: Dog Days, will be released on October 12th. In promotion of libraries and literacy, a Diary of a Wimpy Kid ice cream truck is touring the country from Sacramento to Boston - and it is coming to Princeton!! New Schedule for September

We wanted to send a huge thank you for making our Summer Reading program so very successful. We loved the "Be Creative" theme this year and we hope that you did as well.

Pictures from this summer's programs will be posted soon. Stop by the library to see our display in the lobby. We have pictures from programs and examples of crafts that we made this summer. See if you or your child made our display!!

We will have our September calendar available soon. We will continue to have weekly programs regularly and special programs requiring registration as well. Please make sure you check registration requirements before planning to attend.

We are planning to have new carpet installed in the Children's Department at the end of August - thank you in advance for your patience as we go through this transition. We promise that the end result will be truly spectaular.
